Digital illustration by AW Shurtliff made in Photoshop of a masked king

Inspiration

For this illustration I really wanted to experiment with the way I colored the final image using Photoshop CC. I really like the way artists from the impressionist movement, like Monet, used paint and color. I especially like the way some of them use large paint strokes to depict different objects.

monetFor my painting I wanted to use the power of Photoshop’s brush generator to create a similar technique, while keeping it unique to the digital medium. So I created very geometric brushes that I could use to paint in different values and hues. Finally I added multiple textures to tie it all together.

Sketches

The next three images are my thumbnails, value study, and color studies that I did before starting the final illustration.
